Club Cubana Goa India

UPDATE YEAR 2007: Voted BEST Night Club in India!

After hearing about the Club Cubana on VT, being approached by flyer-clutching youngsters on the beach, and being asked by every second taxi-driver "Party tonight, girls?" we semi-reluctantly decided to reserve our Wednesday evening for the Ladies Night at Club Cubana, the "Night Club in the Sky"... ...and seriously: we weren't disappointed! After bumping along the Goa-typical country roads for 15 minutes, with Trance music thumping throughout our little mini van and a hyperactive taxi driver, we arrived at the foot of Arpora Hill where a signboard with big golden lips declared a right turn. Up the dirt road we headed (I honestly thought the mini bus wasn't going to make it without stalling!); and we were amused about the flashing cat-eyes embedded in the dirt track, showing us the way. At the top, we arrived at an entrance fit to represent the Playboy Mansion, the bouncer marked our wrists with glow-in-the-dark ink, and up the stairs we climbed. Indeed, as we found out later through the manager Raat, it was once an inhabited family home that was later converted into this trendy night club, with great views at day and night. To your left, there's the pool area with BBQ & bar, straight up and ahead takes you into the club with the dark dance floor and yet another bar, and to your right you'll find another plateau with a large bar and a large seating area (chairs, bar stools and sofas). With bats flapping over our heads, confused by the laser show we quickly made friends with the German (gosh, we just get everywhere, don't we?! Haha!) bartender Oliver who gave us the low-down on the club's entrance & admission policies, special theme nights and his recent encounter with a tummy-bug.

On a regular night (open 7 days a week) the cover charge is 400 Rupees, which includes free unlimited drinks all night long! Wednesdays is Ladies Night, with free entrance *and* free drinks all night. Fridays is Bikini Night: anyone (even blokes) in a bikini gets free entrance & free drinks. We went to Club Cubana on Wednesday and again on Friday (one has to show off her new bikini, right?). You can enter the Bikini competition (yes, guys as well!) with weird games in & around the pool, with a prize of 10,000 Rupees for the winner; 7,000 Rs for the runner-up and 3,000 Rs for 3rd place... not bad! All in all: I have NO CLUE how this club makes money whilst giving away free drinks all night long - but it's definitely a great place that you shouldn't miss.

China House at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai

China House at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai

Launched in May 2007, China House is a new and unique paradigm to dining and lounging in the city of Mumbai. Located on a separate level, the multi-level lounge is the perfect setting for intimate lounging and conversation, whether over dinner, or for pre-dinner drinks or late night cocktails.

The main feature of the lounge is the centre, island-style LED light bar, with an array of bottles and unconventional glassware that appear suspended on large glass shelves overhead. Avant-garde interiors form a part of the single private room, while semi-private booths with plush oversized armchairs and open spaces add to the space as the music lingers in the air. The in-house signature beverages, from the classics to the unique after-dinner cocktails, enhance the feel of the lounge even further.

Located on the mezzanine level is “I deck”, the private area which is minimally lit and akin in decor to a private lounge. This relaxing retreat offers the perfect setting to linger after dinner over a fine single malt or to celebrate an occasion with a few near and dear ones. And, if the mood takes them, guests can break away from the seductive atmosphere, switch gears and connect to their own I-pod, listen to their own music and sink into the mesmerising feel of being in their own arena. After all, the “I deck” is all about your unique personality.
Multi-faceted in spirit, the China House lounge area serves as a versatile retreat and the ideal place to linger after dinner over a drink, or to party to the music spun by the in-house DJ.

Ming's Palace Mumbai

This quaint place on Colaba Causeway truly takes you farther East.

The service was as courteous as the food's taste - both met my expectations.

After a satisfying tom yum soup, my friend and I asked the attendant to suggest some chicken dish which would be 'interesting, mid spicy' and he recommended their chef's special chicken in oyster sauce. - Fabulous recommendation! Coupled with some Malay rice, it was a killer combination.

We added some red wine (Chantilli - nothing much to talk about this. Barely OK) to the meal to complete it.

Damages? Rs.1,100 - very much worth every Rupee!

Go here for the food, service and perhaps the most authentic old-skool Chinese interiors you could see in Mumbai. Right out of a movie, almost!

Times AV Revolution 2007

The just concluded "Times AV Revolution 2007" at Goregaon in Mumbai attracted a huge crowd with several big consumer electronics brands present at the event.

"Times AV Revolution 2007," essentially a consumer electronics show was held over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Bombay Exhibition Center in Goregaon. The Delhi leg of the show concluded last month while a similar show will be put up in the garden city sometime in January next year.

The Mumbai event saw a number of products yet to be launched in the Indian market. One of these was Sony's new 11-inch OLED TV, which is literally an ultra thin display with just 3mm of thickness. It measures 287 253 140mm, and weighs two kgs.

With a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, the 11-inch OLED gives out better pictures than Sony's top-of-the-line Bravia series. Other features of the OLED TV include: USB, LAN interface, 1x HDMI port, headphone plug, and S-Force sound. It will retail for $1,800.

Another attraction at the show was the 46-inch Mirror LCD TV by Ad Notam, a company considered the pioneer in the LCD Mirror TV industry.
The LCD Mirror TV is based on 'Mirror Image', which is the LCD engine that drives images through glass to deliver superb picture quality. It transforms an ordinary glass or mirror into an LCD TV.

The 'Mirror Image' product line consists of Mirror TVs for the bathroom, kitchen, living and media room, bedroom, corporate office, etc. The living room applications conceal 'Mirror Image', so it is completely invisible when turned-off. It can be recessed into the wall, hung as a picture, made to stand freely, or even integrated into the furniture.

The Mirror LCD TVs are available via pre-order from Entelechy Systems, distributors for the company. The 46-inch model would cost around Rs 440,000, while the 15-inch model would cost Rs 170,000.

At the show, UK-based NME unveiled their new HD VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc) player, along with content in Hindi, Tamil, and English. Eventually, the company plans to have content in all regional Indian languages.

Claimed to be the world's first multi-layer disc and player format; the HD VMD delivers 1080i/p resolution at up to 40 Mbps transfer rate, supports all HD-capable display devices plus existing optical disc formats such as CD, DVD, and has advanced audio decoding.

Priced close to Rs 10,000, the HD VMD will be available next month, while the bundle box including 5 HD titles will be available at Rs 11,500, through retailers and through e-commerce sites.

For those who've missed the Mumbai leg, they can always catch up with the show at Bangalore (Kanteerva Stadium, Jan 25 to 27, 2007, the last expo in the series).
